Mission, Goals, and Activities
CAN’s public policy mission, adopted by the CAN Policy Council, is to shape public policy for the benefit of California nonprofits and the communities they serve. Its goals are to:
- Enhance the capacity of the nonprofit sector in California to influence public policy.
- Influence the planning, development, and implementation of public policies so they positively affect California nonprofits and the communities and clients they serve.
- Establish an effective statewide public policy infrastructure that is rooted in, and speaks for and about, the nonprofit sector of California.
In order to achieve these goals, the CAN Policy Council:
- Protects the special role of nonprofits in society.
- Supports the principle of community-centered problem solving and programming.
- Promotes increased incentives for public donations and charitable contributions to nonprofit organizations as well as adequate reimbursement for nonprofit program, administrative, and indirect costs.
- Assures that nonprofit representatives are included in public discussion and decision-making that affects the nonprofit sector and its constituents.
- Opposes initiatives that silence the sector.
- Rejects unnecessary restrictions on nonprofit efforts organizations in their efforts to deliver services and respond to community and State needs.
