About CAN
CAN was formed in 1984 in response to a crisis that threatened California nonprofits' access to health insurance. From its modest beginning with a handful of members, CAN has grown to more than 1,700 members. CAN members are geographically diverse, covering all of California as well as representing the rich spectrum of the nonprofit sector from art groups to zoos. CAN's mission is to protect and promote: (1) the influence, accountability, and effectiveness of California nonprofits in a manner that builds their capacity to accomplish their missions and (2) the visibility, idealism, and value of nonprofits in California.
As one of the largest of the country's 35 state associations, CAN is a national nonprofit leader, creating sector-wide responses to the serious challenges facing nonprofit organizations.
