Community Foundations

Community Foundations exist to oversee endowment funds set up by members of its community and to make charitable grants to organizations. While each community foundation has its own distinct personality and style, all share the following attributes: They exist so individuals, corporations and nonprofit organizations can establish a charitable fund without having to deal with the complexities of setting up a special-purpose nonprofit corporation; they function as a philanthropic and grant-making collective; and each is headquartered in and serves a specific community.

Charity Lobbying in the Public Interest
Citizen participation is the essence of democracy, and charitable organizations are one of the most effective vehicles for encouraging people to engage in the democratic process. Lobbying by charity volunteer leaders and staff provides vital expertise to government decision-makers that result in more informed law and policy. CLPI was founded in 1998 out of a concern that the essential public policy role of charities is significantly undermined by several persistent barriers including:
1) The myth that lobbying by charities is not legal;
2) The myth that lobbying is for experts only;
3) The myth that lobbying is not important as a means of achieving an organization's mission. In a real sense, CLPI exists to be a voice for nonprofits' lobbying role and to help organizations find their own voice and power through public interest lobbying.
