Can CAN help me get a grant?
CAN does not provide grant writing services, but we do offer information and resources for fundraising, including grant writing and related issues. Start with the information and resources on this page, and also check out our CAN Classifieds for additional resources and referrals.
Where do nonprofits get their money?
The most common sources are government grants and contracts, earned income, individuals, foundations and corporations. Government monies and earned income have long made up the largest percentage of nonprofit revenues, but individuals, foundations and corporations all play significant roles in supporting and strengthening nonprofit organizations. What's the best way to earn a lot of money fast?
We wish we knew! Unfortunately, there's no magic potion for fundraising. Like anything worth doing, it takes a long-term commitment to relationship building, follow-through, consistency -- and, of course, providing a program or service that meets a need. There are many quality training courses in different areas of fundraising available in California. Start with CAN's own conferences and trainings, and also check out your local management support organization.
Don't see what you're looking for? Submit a question here. If you're a CAN member, you can also ask your peers on the Fundraising Listserv or call the toll-free Managers' Helpline number that you received in your welcome packet when you joined.
The CAN Classifieds include listings of fundraising consultants and others who can help you start or expand your fundraising efforts.
Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) represents more than 27,000 members in 180 chapters throughout the U.S. Canada, Mexico and China working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification prorgams.
The Giving Institute, formerly the American Association of Fundraising Counsel (AAFRC), has developed Standards of Practice and Professional Code of Ethics as a model for professional ethics in the field of fundraising and, since 1955, has published the annual report on philanthropy, Giving USA.
The Foundation Center strengthens the nonprofit sector by advancing knowledge about U.S. philanthropy. It has many quality resources for grant-seekers including trainings and databases of various types of grantmakers.
