What insurance should I purchase for my nonprofit? Of course it depends on the kind of work you do and what risks your organization is exposed to in the course of that work. The Nonprofit Risk Management Center has an excellent introduction that will help you think about coverages here.
I've heard people say that risk management is more than just insurance. What am I missing? They're right! Maintaining proper insurance coverage is one thing you can do to manage risk. But risk management is the practice of preparing for potential risks in lots of areas -- not just those covered by insurance -- using lots of strategies and tools. For example, liability insurance might cover part of a financial mismanagement event at your organization. But no amount of insurance can recover a bad reputation -- and there is a lot you can do to prepare for the possibility of damage to your reputation so you can mitigate the damage if it does occur. What's the difference between risk management and crisis management? The term "crisis management" usually refers to how you deal with sudden events that seriously and immediately impact your organization's ability to deliver services -- such as a natural (or not) disaster, the death of a key staff member, the discovery of massive embezzlement and so forth. A crisis may also be positive, for example a sudden large influx of donations that you don't have the infrastructure to manage as needed.
